Weird science is a film about two nerdy high school hopefuls, who are pretty much invisible to the rest of the high schoolers. However, this all changes when they take to their computer and magically bring to life a insanely beautiful woman who helps them become the most coolest kids on the block.
Some stereotypes found in this film are:
The Nerds:
This is one conventional character which is found in weird science. Nerds are often stereotyped as being boring because they are well behaved and really smart. They are also stereotyped as being losers because of their inability to date a pretty girl or being able to stand up for themselves. These stereotypes are largely represented through mise-en-scene. Some aspects of mise-en-scene which confirm or support these stereotypes are the way they dress, their hair, props and body language. Nerds are often characters which get bullied by the popular kids and usually appear to have no friends however in this film this stereotype is broken as their are two nerds as oppose to just one who is friendless.
The popular girl :
The popular girl is a conventional character often found in a large proportion of teen films. The stereotypes affiliated with a popular girl include being stuck up, insanely beautiful, a bitch and being rich. The popular girl in teen films is often the girl that every guy wants to be with and every girl wants to be. In this film this is portrayed well as it is clearly shown that every guy wants the popular girl because she is stunningly beautiful and every girl wants to be her because of the popular girls ability to get any guy she wants. Usually, in teen films the nerds and popular girl would be totally different and would be on two ends of the same stick however in this film the are on the same side and work together in order for the nerds to gain popularity and respect from their fellow high schoolers. This is one way convention is broken in this film.
The big brother:
In most teen films there is often a sibling who is always discouraging or bullying the weaker character in the film. The stereotypes found in this character include, being tough, scary, intimidating and threatening. These are common stereotypes that often come with being the older male sibling in teen films. This is clearly shown in weird science where the nerd (weaker character) is bullied on countless occasions by his older brother.
The jocks:
The jocks are often characters which are found in every teen movie which is set in high school. the stereotypes that come with being a jock include, being really tough, being strong, a jerk, good looking and being self obsessed. The jocks are characters which are often respected by their fellow high schoolers because of their position and status gained because of their ability to harm anything or anyone who gets in their way. the jocks are characters which find it funny and amusing to bully nerds this supports the stereotypes of jocks being jerky and cruel. This stereotype is shown in weird science.
