Type of transpotation

typically the most popular teen movies  are based on American teenagers and the whole high school experience. these films being set in america means that teenagers are allowed to drive to school. the type of vehicle people drive often shows us what type of character they are and sometimes may even give away what might happen during the film.
for example a sporty car like this one:

are typically used by the 'jocks' which are the sport charters and are often very ocular and very rich. these characters are also typically bullies and the ones that usually are on the teachers good side no mater how bad they are.a character that i could imagine ring around in this car is crag cook from the film 'Bad Kids Go To Hell' who is very sporty and he comes from a rich family.

also a pink car such as this one:

this car can typically be used for a really girly girl who cares about her appearance a lot. these type of girls are usually really popular and also really rich too and are usually the type of girl that other girls envy. a character that i would Imagine driven this car would be Elle Woods from the movie 'Legally Blonde' because she reminds of someone who is really self involved and the typical type f person in films that would drive this car.

Stereotypes found in 'Not another teen movie'

Stereotypes found in 'Not another teen movie'

Popular cheer leader girl
One stereotypical character found in this film is the popular cheer leader girl. This is one conventional character always found in teen movies. This character is often stereotyped as being bitchy and slutty, This view is reflected by their choice of costume and body language. The costumes worn by this character are often short and very revealing.

Nerd/ 'wannabe'
Another stereotypical character found in this film is the nerd, also known as the 'desperate wannabe.' The nerd is often a character found in almost every teen movie. This role comes with stereotypes such as being weird, ugly and boring. These stereotypes are shown by their costume which most of the time consists of  chequered shirts buttoned up to the top, greasy hair, and thick framed glasses.

The Jock
The jock is also a conventional character which is often found in most teen movies. The jock is a popular character who is respected and looked up to by the nerdy wannabes. The jock found in teen films are often rude, cocky and tough. These stereotypes are supported by their body language. Also, the jock's costumes are a reflection of these stereotypes. They mostly dress in brightly coloured oversized baseball jackets and sneakers.

The pretty ugly girl
The pretty ugly girl is also a conventional character found in teen movies. The pretty ugly girl is the character who is often stereotyped as being ugly but is not really all that ugly or boring. They are often unpopular and are somewhat invisible and irrelevant to all other high schoolers. Some stereotypes which come with this character are: quiet, ugly and boring. These stereotypes are very similar to ones given to geeks. Some of these stereotypes are reflected in their costumes which consist of dull coloured sweaters, thick framed glasses and tied back hair.

weird science

Stereotypes in Weird science

There are many stereotypes in weird science especially the characters in the film such as geeky teens, popular teens, bullies and perfect girl.
The nerdy characters are represented as geeky by the way they look and act which is they are very skinny and wimpy and they havent gone through puberty fully yet as their voices are still quite high pitch still compered to other guys their age also the fact they are very smart acedemacly makes them stereotypically nerds as they spend weekends at home watching cartoons/films, playing video games and reading comic books. Gary has an older brother who is horrible to him and taunts him which is a common stereotype to have a mean older brother who bullies the younger brother as they are stronger taller and older.
The bullies at school are the popular guys so they tease the weaker teenagers at college and date the ‘prettiest girls’ in school. The stereotypes for popular boys are muscular, handsome and tall and for girls beautiful and hot body the popular girls and boys hang out together and have parties which is common for them.

The fact they create the perfect girl out of magazines with photoshoped women and a barbie doll shows the stereotypes to being the perfect woman as you have to be slim, tall, hot body, no spots or inperfections on the face so you have to look like one of those models in the magazines. The fact that the boys were even able to create lisa shows their intellegence as they were able to hack into the computer and overrun it.

HOLIDAY TASK

CLUELESS!
trailer:

clueless is an extremely popular teen film that was made in the 90's and is still to this day a very successful movie. it has a very common teen film plot as it focuses on romance, however this film does have a twist, instead of focusing on the love life of the main character Cher it focuses on her trying to fix her friends up and fix their relationships, which is what adds the comedy factor into the film as it shows her being oblivious to her own love life when its in shatters. Dionne and her boyfriend Murray are constantly having relationship problems which adds humor as their problems are not so serious, which in my perspective is mocking teenagers like saying their relationships are never serious. on the other hand Tia is hopelessly in love with the 'skater boy' which is not something Cher is glad about as it risks ruining their hard earned image, so Cher tries to fix her up with a popular boy that she feels is much more suited to Tia's image. the film ends with Cher realizing she has feelings for her ex-step brother Josh . they both have very strong chemistry throughout the film which made me happy to see them get together at the end of the film. also Tia and her 'skater boy' are together and Dionne and Murray are as well. perfect ending

Travelling and arriving blog task:

Travelling and arriving plays a key function in teen films as it conveys the character of a person. Types of transport used by a person can often give the audience an insight into the character and their background. Also, types of transport also plays a part in confirming or rejecting the stereotypes the audience create due to other mise en scene used in the film such as costumes, body language and props. The use of transport by characters in teen films also helps to establish binary oppositions among characters.

Types of transport used and what they infer:

Typically in teen films the popular rich kids are the ones who often have the 'cool, fresh' cars. Jocks are often shown as travelling and arriving in a sports car which usually appears to be very brightly coloured and seems to drag a lot of attention. For example in the movie she's all that the popular boy is seen arriving to school in a bright yellow flashy car. This allows the audience to make their own assumptions based on the transport they use.

Also, another popular way of travelling and arriving in teen films is walking or the school bus. These methods are usually used by the 'losers' or 'unpopular' kids in high school. Both these methods of travelling are very low key and don't drag a lot of attention. They also enforce their position in their school of being 'invisible'.

How binary oppositions are established in teen film openings:

  • Scene 1 - Loser Runs to moped/ bad boy walks to motorcycle (a close - up shot on their feet as the moves towards their transport)
  • Scene 2 - Close - up moped with a basket on the front/ then a close - up of the motorcycle front (further emphasis on the differences between them as characters)
  • Scene 3 - Close - up of shoes as they get on chosen vehicles, close - up on Loser shoes (most likely loafers) / close - up of bad boy shoes (combat boots)
  • Scene 4 - Slow reverse zoom on both characters driving away (can only see their backs)
  • Scene 5 - Medium close - up of both boys next to each other at a stop light (still only shot from the back) then the motorcycle at the green light passes the moped.
  • Scene 6 - Medium close - up of both boys getting off vehicle (since bad boy arrives first the shot is on him then it goes to loser (see both of their faces now)

holiday task

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is filled with the classic plotlines of a teen movie; there is  a romance between two characters - or in the case of this movie, a weird kind of love triangle - where there is of course forces or in other words drama that is just dying to seperate the two characters from reaching the nirvana of love. To put the icing on the cake the romance is this movie is just tragic and bordering on romeo and juliet sad since it's like the love is rotten and forbidden either way - Katniss can't be with Peeta because they could die in the games, but it does get them sympathy from the world and she can't be with Gale because she has to pretend to be with Peeta - no matter what way you look at it in this movie and in general most teen movies there will always be something that trys to intecept the love of the female protaganist, yep truly depressing. Now of course just to add on to the typical movie plotline, there is a big bad villian. In the case of this movie that ogre that ruins everyones life is the government, yep the governmement is a jerkfaced piece of poop, ruining everyones life from all angles shame on them. President Snow is that evil villian with that whole white haired creepy vibe he has going on, nope do not mess with him.
Now of course in any good movie there is some kind a of dilemma or rising problem that needs to be solved and in this case there are a series of riots as people being to go against the dictator like rule of President Snow; thus begins a big plotline from the story.

THE ROOMATE

weird science

                                                              WEIRD SCIENCE

Weird Science is riddled with the conventional stereotypes that make up a classic teen movie.

·         The Popular Girl – Being generally beautiful and attractive this kind of character is normally the one that every boy wants for themselves and most girls wish they were like – this is seen from the jock characters ( Ian and Max) wanting to have her for themselves even for one day.

·         The Typical ‘Nerd’ – This particular breed of teen character is always depicted as a wimp, depressingly bullied by the jocks (which are often seen in these movies – even at the very beginning). Classically in teen movies the nerd finally reaches a point where he finally gets whatever girl he wanted or a girlfriend in general the nerd gets a happy ending.

·         The Big Brother or Sister – Most teen characters in moves tend to have a sibling and if that sibling is say an older brother there is always a world of pain and sibling bulling. This kind of thing is not only seen in movies like ‘Weird Science’ from the 80’s it’s still a common relationship seen in teen movies today.

·         The Bully, The Jock, and The Jerk – Every teen movie scenario has one, no matter what there is always a ‘buff’ bad boy that loves to pick on the little guy, especially a scrawny nerd which is pretty darn unfortunate for ‘The Typical Nerd’. Now this kind of character is always bursting with arrogance thinking that every beautiful and remotely popular girl belongs solely in there cocky hands. However this is greatly challenged by this movie seeing as the popular girl gets nowhere in there reach – bet that was a blow to the pretty little Jocks.
